From a limited edition presentation of just 1,150 pieces, this five ounce silver proof Britannia is the first of its kind issued by The Royal Mint. Britannia - the female personification of the British Isles - has been a feature of our coinage since Roman times. In 1987 her name was given to a new series of British bullion coins, struck first in gold and later in silver. At first, those silver Britannias were struck from metal with a millesimal fineness of 95.8%. This was improved in 2013 with subsequent Britannias composed of .999 silver. With this change came a fresh reverse design and a new range of 5oz coins, issued only in proof. The 2013 reverse is the work of portrait sculptor Robert Hunt. His Britannia is seated, wearing her traditional plumed helmet and flowing robes, her trident ready in hand. On her knew sits an owl, a symbol of wisdom also associated with the Roman goddesses Minerva or Athena. It’s a scarce and elegant design, quite different from previous depictions of Britannia on these Royal Mint coins. The legend reads ‘BRITANNIA’ with the weight, composition and date below: ‘5 OUNCES FINE SILVER 2013’. This is paired with Ian Rank-Broadley’s fourth definitive coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II to the obverse, as used on British coinage between 1998 and 2015. This new five ounce edition weighs 156.30 grams, has a diameter of 65.00 millimetres and a face value of £10 / Ten Pounds. It comes in its original presentation packaging from The Royal Mint, the coin itself protected by a clear capsule. An informative booklet and a separate certificate of authenticity are enclosed.
